7 Days, Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route

Lemosho is our personal first preference for reaching Africa’s roof, cheers to its fascinating stunning vistas, unspoilt wildlife, excellent acclimatization opportunities, and low climber traffic. After a 4-hour drive from Moshi to Londorossi Gate, you’ll be on the western slope of Mt Kilimanjaro, with such a route leading to the world famous Shira Plateau. That is where you will start your adventure through all climate zones, from alpine meadows to everlasting ice. The climb is creamy and gradual, with the highest success rate of any Kilimanjaro route. You may choose six, seven, or eight-day programs, depending on how much time you have available. For better acclimatization, longer programs are always preferred over shorter ones. The 6- and 7-day Lemosho programs start with a high-altitude drop-off: you’ll be transferred by off-road vehicle to an elevation of 3,500 m/ 11,500 f and begin your hike from there. The higher you start, the easier your acclimatization will be.

Details

The Lemosho Route is one of the most scenic and less crowded paths to conquer Mount Kilimanjaro. Known for its breathtaking landscapes, diverse ecosystems, and excellent acclimatization profile, it offers climbers the highest success rate to reach Africa’s Roof  Uhuru Peak (5,895m). Beginning on the western slopes, trekkers traverse lush rainforests, cross the majestic Shira Plateau, and ascend through alpine meadows to the icy summit. This 7-day journey is perfect for adventurers seeking a balance of challenge, beauty, and serenity in their climb to the top of Africa.

Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), where you will be met by a Nirvana Africa Safaris Travel agent and transferred to Weruweru River Lodge or Maridadi Hotel, which is included in the tariff. The hotel will give all of the necessities for a pleasant visit, including cozy rooms, hot water, kind service, a pool, and Internet connection. A briefing with our management will take place in the evening, and they will ensure that you are prepared to begin the ascent.
Drive to the Londorosi Park Gate after breakfast. The trip takes about 5 hours. The drive through the Shira plateau is one of the best places on Kilimanjaro to see big games. Ascend to Mti Mkubwa camp. Arrive at the campsite, pitch your tent, and have dinner.
After breakfast, begin the short hike from Mti Mkubwa to Shira camp. This usually takes no more than 5 hours, but it is critical for effective acclimatization. The west face of Kibo volcano (also known as Kilimanjaro) towers over the campsite. Take a break for lunch, set up camp, relax, or go on a day hike. This hike takes you through the lower moorland, where large shrubs and wildflowers rule the landscape.
After breakfast, break camp and begin the short hike to Shira Camp 2. This makes for an excellent acclimatization day.
The route turns east into a semi-desert and rocky landscape surrounding Lava Tower, where you will reach an altitude of 4630m after about a 5 hours walk. Before ascending the rocky scree path to Lava Tower, lunch will be served in a designated area (4630m). Definitely the most challenging day so far. It is usually around this point that some climbers begin to experience symptoms such as shortness of breath, irritability, and headaches for the first time. After lunch, you descend nearly 680 meters to the Barranco camping area, and when you reach the high altitude of 4600 meters at Lava Tower, the true acclimatization benefit of this day becomes clear.
Totally exposed to the ever-present gales the tents are pitched on a narrow, stony, and dangerous ridge. Make sure that you familiarise yourself with the terrain before dark to avoid any accidents. The summit is now a further 1345m up and you will make the final ascent the same night. Prepare your equipment, ski stick and thermal clothing for your summit attempt. This should include the replacement of your headlamp and camera batteries and make sure you have a spare set available as well. To prevent freezing it will be wise to carry your water in a thermal flask. Go to bed at around 19h00 and try to get some precious rest and sleep for not more than 5-hours.
You will rise around 23h30, and after some tea and biscuits you shuffle off into the night. You will head in a northwesterly direction and ascend through a heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. This 6-hour walk to Stella point is for many climbers, mentally and physically the most challenging on the route. At Stella Point (5685m) you will stop for a short rest and will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see (weather permitting). From Stella Point, you will normally encounter snow all the way on your 2-hour ascent to Uhuru Peak. The time you will spend on the summit will depend on the weather conditions. Do not stop here for too long, as it will be extremely difficult to start again due to cold and fatigue. Enjoy your accomplishment and a day to remember for the rest of your life. The walk back to Barafu from the summit takes about 3 hours. Here you will have a well-earned but short rest and collect the rest of your gear, before heading down to Mweka Camp for dinner and overnight.
After Breakfast, From the Mweka Gate, you will continue down into the Mweka village, normally a muddy and long hour walk. In the Mweka village drive to Weruweru river Lodge or Maridadi Hotel  and you will be served a delicious hot lunch and a long overdue hot shower. Overnight in Weruweru river Lodge or Maridadi Hotel. It is recommended and tips are highly appreciated at the end of their trip. Tips can be given to the guide at the hotel. This is also where successful climbers receive their summit certificates. Those climbers who reached Stella Point (5685m) are issued with green certificates and those who reached Uhuru Peak (5895m) receive gold certificates.
After an early breakfast, transfer to Kilimanjaro airport for your departure flight back home.
