6 Days Mount Meru Package (4-Day Climb with Arrival and Departure)
Mount Meru is climbed via the only official Momella Route in Arusha National Park,
Tanzania. The standard recommended itinerary is 4 days for better acclimatization and higher
success rates (a steeper 3-day version also exists). An armed park ranger accompanies groups
on the lower slopes because of wildlife (buffalo, giraffe, warthogs, monkeys, etc.)
Accommodation on the mountain is in basic huts (Miriakamba and Saddle). Full days meals
on the mountain and drinking water will be provided. There will also be a briefing at the hotel
at 4:00 PM before the hiking day at your accommodation.

Mount Meru is a dormant stratovolcano located in Arusha National Park, Tanzania. Standing at 4,566 meters (14,980 feet), it is Tanzania's second-highest mountain and the fifth-highest in Africa. It sits 70 kilometers west of Kilimanjaro and offers dramatic crater views, rich wildlife walking safaris, and a popular acclimatization trek.

Meet and transfer to your hotel in Arusha at African View Lodge.HB

Hiking time: 4–6 hours
Habitat: Grassland & montane forest
After breakfast, drive from Arusha/Moshi to Momella Gate (about 1–1.5 hours from Arusha).
Complete park registration, meet the armed ranger, and begin trekking. The trail passes open
grasslands (good chance of seeing buffalo, warthogs, giraffes) then enters forest with colobus
monkeys, birds, and possible waterfalls or the Fig Tree Arch.
Overnight at Miriakamba Hut.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner on the mountain.
Altitude: 2,514 m → 3,570 m
Distance: ~6–8 km
Hiking time: 3–5 hours
Habitat: Forest transitioning to heath & moorland
Steeper but shorter day. Ascend through forest, then along Elephant Ridge / Mgongo wa
Tembo with excellent views of the Meru Crater and Ash Cone. Reach Saddle Hut by early
afternoon.
Optional acclimatization hike to Little Meru (~3,820 m) for sunset views and better altitude
adaptation (recommended).
Overnight at Saddle Hut.
Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner.
Altitude: 3,570 m → 4,566 m → 2,514 m
Distance: ~14–18 km total
Hiking time: 8–12 hours (very long day)
Habitat: Alpine desert/crater rim
Midnight or early morning start (around 00:00–02:00) with headlamps. Climb steeply to Rhino Point (~3,800 m), then along the narrow crater rim ridge past Cobra Point to Socialist
Peak for sunrise. Spectacular views of Kilimanjaro (on clear days), the crater, and surrounding landscape.
Descend carefully the same way, rest briefly at Saddle Hut if needed, then continue down to Miriakamba Hut.
Overnight at Miriakamba Hut. Meals: early light breakfast, packed lunch, dinner.
Altitude: 2,514 m → 1,500 m
Distance: ~7–13 km (depending on exact path)
Hiking time: 2–4 hours
After breakfast, descend through forest and grassland (more wildlife viewing possible).
Reach Momella Gate, collect certificates, say goodbye to the mountain crew, and transfer
back to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi.
Rest, shower, and celebrate. Overnight at the Africa View Lodge. HB
Transfer from the hotel to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for your flight home (or
onward travel). Timing depends on your flight schedule.
