Arrive at Kilimanjaro airport; picked up with Nirvana driver and then transferred to or similar Weruweru river lodge in Moshi for overnight and morning breakfast
After breakfast, picked from Weruweru river lodge and drive to Marangu gate then hike to Mandara hut.
The journey begins at an elevation of 1,860 meters, where the air is still humid and thick with the scents of the surrounding rainforest. As you set off from the gate, the trail meanders through a dense canopy of ancient trees draped with moss and ferns, offering frequent sightings of blue monkeys and the vibrant plumage of tropical birds. The walk to Mandara Hut typically takes four to five hours, covering a distance of approximately 8 kilometers with a steady, manageable incline. Upon arrival at the clearing, you will be settled into the A-frame wooden dormitories, where a hot dinner will be served as the evening temperatures begin to drop.
The second day of trekking involves a transition from the lush rainforest into the vast, open moorland. Shortly after leaving Mandara Hut, the forest thins out, revealing the striking timberline and the first clear views of the Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The path leads through rolling hills covered in giant heather and lobelias, adapted to the harsher sun and thinner air. You will reach Horombo Hut, situated at 3,720 meters, in the mid-afternoon. This location is crucial for acclimatization, providing a panoramic vantage point over the plains of Tanzania below.
This is a dedicated acclimatization day spent at Horombo Hut. To help the body adjust to the significant increase in altitude, a short trek is conducted towards the Mawenzi Tarn or the Zebra Rocks, named for their distinctive black and white mineral stripes. The objective is to "hike high and sleep low," stimulating the production of red blood cells before returning to the same huts for a second night. This step is vital for increasing the success rate of reaching the summit, allowing trekkers to rest and hydrate while taking in the dramatic volcanic landscape.
The trek continues across the "Saddle," a high-altitude desert plateau that connects the two peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo. The vegetation disappears almost entirely, leaving a stark, lunar landscape characterized by loose scree and biting winds. The walk to Kibo Hut, located at 4,700 meters, is physically demanding due to the thinning oxygen. Once there, an early dinner is served, and trekkers retire to their bunks by late afternoon to catch a few hours of sleep before the final midnight push.
The summit attempt begins around midnight. Using headlamps to illuminate the steep, frozen volcanic ash, you will climb toward Gilman’s Point on the crater rim. From there, a final two-hour trek along the snowy edge leads to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 meters. After celebrating the sunrise, the descent begins immediately, retracing the path back to Kibo Hut for a short rest and then continuing down to Horombo Hut for the final night on the mountain.
The final leg of the journey is a long descent through the moorland and back into the rainforest. You will reach Marangu Gate by midday, where successful climbers receive their certificates. A vehicle will be waiting to transport you back to the Weruweru river lodge in Moshi for a long-awaited hot shower and a celebratory dinner.
Transfer to the airport for the flight back home.
